Qualifications

Esther Dörendahl is a graduate from University of Münster (Dr. phil.) and of Karlsruhe Technical University (M.Sc.).
She is a high-profile ecologist with strong interdisciplinary skills.

Esther has a profound background and extensive working experience in international development cooperation in:

  • climate policy, climate change adaptation, climate proofing of various sectors, implementing NDCs and the Paris Agreement, capacity building and training on climate change
  • integrated water resources planning and management, water supply and sanitation (urban and rural), management consulting in the water sector
  • integrated waste management approaches, applying circular economy principles and source-to-sea thinking
  • green city development to increase the resilience of growing cities.
  • cross-cutting development topics, such as gender, vulnerable groups and displacement and migration.

Her personal skills cover flexibility, stamina, pragmatism and zest. As water expert and ecologist she has worked for well-known institutions, such as the Australian Environment Protection Authority (EPA) (1998), Wuppertal Institute (2002, 2009), GTZ (2003-2006), GITEC Consult (2006-2008) and Prognos AG (since 2016) in Australia, Egypt, Eritrea, Germany, Lao PDR, Philippines, South Africa and Turkey. Her language skills cover German and English (fluent), Italian (advanced) as well as Spanish and French (advanced beginner).

Besides her consulting work she has written a dissertation at the Institute of Landscape Ecology, University of Münster, at the Centre for Development Research, University of Bonn, and at Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, Wuppertal. Her doctoral studies (2010 - 2015) covered conceptual and empirical research on structured boundary work for sustainable water resources management with a regional focus on South Africa. The dissertation: 'Boundary work for collaborative water resources management: Conceptual and empirical insights from a South African case study' has been published in December 2015 and can be downloaded here.
